Modern frost-free freezers should stay mostly clear. If you see a coat of frost on the walls, ice crystals on your food or a thick sheet of ice on the back panel, something is letting in moist air or stopping the defrost cycle. Frost buildup in the freezer also blocks airflow, which can make the freezer and the fridge warm up.

Need a technician? Our refrigerator repair New Braunfels team fixes cooling, frost and ice maker problems on all major brands.

Why is frost building up in my freezer?

Frost forms when warm, humid air gets into the freezer or when the defrost system stops melting ice off the cooling coils. The most common causes are a worn door gasket, a door that does not close all the way, a failed defrost heater, a bad defrost thermostat or timer, a clogged defrost drain and warm food put in uncovered. Frost on the back panel points to the defrost system. Frost near the door points to the seal.

Safety first

Do not use a knife, ice pick or screwdriver to remove ice. You can puncture the coils. Unplug the fridge before you remove any inside panel, and keep hair dryers away from standing water.

Common causes and fixes

1. Worn door gasket

The rubber seal around the door keeps humid air out. Central Texas summers are humid, so a weak seal lets in a lot of moisture. Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out easily, the seal is weak there. Clean it with warm, soapy water; replace it if it is torn or flat.

2. Door not closing all the way

An overfilled bin, a bag or a tilted fridge can keep the door open a crack. Make sure the door swings shut on its own and nothing blocks it.

3. Failed defrost heater

Several times a day, a heater behind the back panel melts frost off the coils. If it burns out, ice builds until air cannot move. The freezer may then get warm too. Our guide to a freezer not freezing covers that next stage.

4. Bad defrost thermostat, timer or control

These parts tell the heater when to turn on and off. If one fails, the defrost cycle never runs. They need testing with a meter.

5. Clogged defrost drain

Melted frost runs down a small drain to a pan under the fridge. If the drain freezes or clogs, water refreezes into a sheet of ice on the freezer floor or drips into the fridge.

6. Warm or uncovered food

Hot leftovers and uncovered food add moisture that turns into frost. Let food cool and wrap it well before freezing.

How to defrost the freezer safely

  1. Move food to a cooler with ice packs.
  2. Unplug the fridge or turn the control to off.
  3. Prop the door open and lay towels on the floor.
  4. Set a bowl of warm water inside to speed it up.
  5. Wipe it dry, plug it back in and wait a few hours before putting food back.

If frost returns within a week or two, a defrost part has likely failed. Our guide to a refrigerator freezing food covers the opposite problem on the fridge side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is some frost in the freezer normal?

A light dusting near the door after it has been opened a lot is normal. Thick frost or ice on the back panel is not.

Why is there frost on the back wall of my freezer?

Frost on the back panel usually means the defrost system is not working. The defrost heater, thermostat, timer or control may have failed.

Can I chip the ice off with a knife?

No. You can puncture the cooling coils or a refrigerant line. Let the ice melt with the freezer off and the door open.

Why does frost come back after I defrost the freezer?

Either moist air is getting in through a bad door seal, or a defrost part has failed. If it returns within a week or two, call for service.
