Why won’t my washer door unlock?
A front-load washer keeps the door locked while there is water in the drum, while the drum is still spinning, or while the control thinks a cycle is running. The most common causes are a clogged drain filter, a kinked drain hose, a cycle that hasn’t fully ended, child lock turned on, a power glitch, and a failed door lock or control board.
Safety first
Never force the door open. If there is water in the drum, it can pour onto the floor. Unplug the washer before you open the drain filter panel or touch the door lock.
6 causes and what to try
| Cause | Clue | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Water still in the drum | You can see water in the window | Drain it through the filter, then try again |
| Cycle not finished | Display still counting or spinning down | Wait 2 to 5 minutes |
| Child lock is on | Lock or key icon on the display | Hold the child lock buttons for 3 seconds |
| Power glitch | Display frozen or blank | Unplug for 5 minutes, then plug back in |
| Clogged drain filter or hose | Drain error code like OE or 5C | Clean the filter, straighten the hose |
| Failed door lock or control | Clicking, LO or dL code, or no unlock at all | Call a technician |
How do you open a locked washer door safely?
- Cancel the cycle. Press Power or Cancel and wait 5 minutes.
- Unplug the washer. Wait another 5 minutes so the lock can release.
- Drain the water. Open the small panel at the bottom front. Put a shallow pan and towels down, pull out the small drain hose and let the water run out. Then twist out the filter and clean it.
- Use the emergency release. Many models have a pull tab or cord near the filter. Pull it gently to release the latch.
- Try the door. If it still won’t open, stop. The lock or latch may be broken.

Call if the door won’t open after you drain the washer and use the release, if you hear the lock click but nothing happens, if the washer shows a lock code like LO, dL or dC that won’t clear, or if the door handle or latch is broken. These usually mean a failed door lock assembly, a broken latch or a control problem.
A drain problem often causes the lock problem, so a door that sticks after many loads can be an early warning. If water is also getting onto the floor, read washer leaking water. If the washer won’t start a new cycle once the door is closed, see washer won’t start.
How do you keep it from happening again?
- Clean the drain pump filter every 2 to 3 months.
- Check pockets for coins, keys and hair ties.
- Use the right amount of HE detergent. Extra suds slow draining.
- Don’t slam the door. It wears the latch and the lock.
- Leave the door open after the last load so the gasket dries. It also helps a washing machine that smells bad.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my washer door unlock after the cycle?
Most often there is still water in the drum, the drum is still spinning down, or the door lock or control has failed. A clogged drain is the most common cause.
How long should I wait for a washer door to unlock?
Wait 2 to 5 minutes after the cycle ends. Many washers keep the lock on until the drum stops and the water level sensor reads empty.
Is there an emergency release on a front-load washer?
Many models have a small pull tab or cord near the drain filter at the bottom front. Drain the water first, then pull it to release the latch. Check your manual.
Can I force a washer door open?
Don’t. Forcing it can break the latch, the door handle or the lock, and water can pour out. Drain the washer first and use the release if it has one.
