Samsung washers show a short code when something stops the cycle. Newer models use codes like 4C, 5C and dC. Older ones use 4E, 5E and dE for the same problems. This guide covers the 8 codes we see most in New Braunfels homes, what each means and what you can safely try.

If the code keeps coming back, our washer repair New Braunfels technicians work on Samsung front-load and top-load washers, including FlexWash and AddWash models.

What do Samsung washer error codes mean?

Samsung washer codes point to one of a few problem areas: water not coming in (4C), water not draining (5C), an unbalanced load (UB), the door or lid (dC, LO), too many suds (Sud), or a sensor or motor fault (3C, tC, HC). Checking the hoses, the drain filter and the load fixes most of the common ones.

Safety first

Unplug the washer or turn off its breaker before you open the drain filter or pull it out from the wall. Water in the drum can pour out of the filter fast, so keep towels and a shallow pan ready.

How to clear the most common codes

4C: no water coming in

Make sure both faucets behind the washer are fully open. Pull the washer out and check that the hoses aren’t kinked. Turn off the water, unscrew the hoses at the washer, and clean the small mesh screens inside the inlets. Hard water in New Braunfels can clog these screens with scale. 5C: water won’t drain

On front-loaders, open the small panel at the bottom front. Drain the water through the small hose into a pan, then twist out the filter and clear lint, coins and hair. On top-loaders, check the drain hose and standpipe. Make sure the hose isn’t pushed too far into the standpipe, which can siphon water.

UB: unbalanced load

Spread the load evenly. Wash bulky items like comforters alone in the bedding cycle, or add a couple of towels to a single heavy item. Check that the washer sits level and doesn’t rock.

When should you call a technician?

Call if 5C returns after the filter is clean, if dC or LO keeps showing with the door closed, or if you see motor or heater codes like 3C or HC. These usually mean a failed drain pump, door lock, motor sensor or control part. Leaving a drain problem alone can leave clothes soaking and grow mildew.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 5C mean on a Samsung washer?

5C (or 5E or nd on older models) means the washer can’t drain. Clean the drain pump filter at the bottom front, check the drain hose for kinks, and make sure the standpipe isn’t clogged.

How do I fix 4C on a Samsung washer?

4C (or 4E) means not enough water is coming in. Open both water valves fully, check the hoses for kinks, and clean the small screens where the hoses connect to the washer.

Why does my Samsung washer say dC?

dC means the door or lid is not closed or the lock didn’t engage. Close it firmly and check for clothes caught in the door. If it keeps showing, the door lock may need replacing.

How do I reset a Samsung washer?

Unplug it or turn off the breaker for about 5 minutes. Some models also reset by pressing and holding the Start/Pause button. Fix the cause first, or the code will come back.
